Maverick was left tied to a post on our access lane overnight. He was afraid at first and it was difficult to get near, but he was soon persuaded that everything was OK and he came quietly. He was a sad sight indeed; so obviously unloved and neglected, he was extremely underweight and showing signs of Leishmania (confirmed by a blood test).
Naturally, we started on the necessary medication and food immediately and he has improved immensely. However, he is still underweight because, like many GSDs, he is stressed in the shelter environment and spends his days pacing the pen. Ideally he needs to add around another 10 kg to his weight to be and to look healthy.
He is a lovely boy but, even underweight, still strong. It is probable that he is an ex-guard dog discarded when signs of his Leishmania appeared. As such he would have spent his days and nights patrolling whatever area he was to guard with little or no human interaction or training. So, older though he may be, he will still need some training and to be shown some of the niceties required for living in a home.
It would be good to find him a family with experience of big dogs. Because of his size and tendency still to jump up at people in his haste to be near them we would not recommend him to a home with young children.
