Maverick

Maverick was left tied to a post on our access lane overnight. Initially, he was afraid and difficult to approach, but he was soon reassured and came to us quietly. He was a sad sight—clearly unloved and neglected, extremely underweight, and showing signs of Leishmania, as confirmed by a blood test. We immediately began his necessary medication and provided him with quality food, and he has since improved immensely, to the point where you wouldn’t know that he had any illness.

Maverick is a lovely boy but quite strong. It’s quite possible that he was an ex-guard dog, discarded once signs of Leishmania appeared. He may have spent his days and nights patrolling an area with little to no human interaction or training. Although he is an older boy, he will still require some training and guidance on how to behave in a home environment. It would be ideal to find him a family with experience in handling large dogs, though, given his size and tendency to jump up at people in his eagerness to be close, we do not recommend him for a home with young children.
