We will let Rover's rescuer tell his story:
I was working at Elea Golf Club and last October was going home from work via the industrial road from Acheleia when I noticed a skinny dog standing in the middle of the opposite lane. The road there has many bends and straight away it came to my mind that if car came round fast it might easily hit him. So I stopped and got out of my car; the dog started running away into the bushes. I tried to reach him but he didn't come close. What else could I do but turn back and go to my car. I looked back and saw that the dog was following me.... so i was thinking 'well, in the end you do want to be saved?' I put some water in my lunch box and he come to drink; I managed to catch him easily then. While holding on to him I tried to reach the shelters in Paphos but unfortunately they all said that they were full, which, of course, is not surprising in Cyprus. In the end I lifted the dog into the car and thought, 'OK, I'll keep him safe for now and try to find a solution tomorrow'.
At home I already had 2 rescue dogs of my own and 2 foster puppies. I really didn't have anywhere to put this hunting dog, who I named Rover, because my male dog is very dominant and can't stand other male dogs. I had to put Rover in a crate; it wasn't really big enough but it would keep him safe.
He was very skinny and weak, and when we walked he was always behind. Next day I tried to find a shelter place for him with no luck 😞. As soon as I could I took him to the vet and guess what - he had microchip and it was registered! I did not not believe it, Rover could go home. The owner was contacted. He said he had sold the dog but not changed the microchip details! I contacted the Govt Vet Services who had the man sign Rover over to me... and suddenly I was the official owner of Rover - something I had not planned for. But what else was I to do?
It wasn't easy with a job, 2 children, 2 dogs and 2 foster puppies. We managed though and soon the fosters left us, which made things a bit easier. Rover went to the vet for deworming etc. and all the necessary tests. They did not find anything wrong and his lack of weight was down to worms. Once that was sorted he started to gain weight and overall his mood and behaviour started to change. At the beginning when I walked him I thought he would be the perfect dog for older people because he walked calmly and didn't pull. As he gained weight and became stronger my thoughts changed. If he smells something interesting his hunting instincts kick in and he wants to chase the smell. Then there is no stopping him πŸ˜€.
He was very calm around my 3-year-old boy and never showed any aggression even when my boy played doctor and patient with him. Over time I introduced him to my dogs and things went OK, no signs of aggression from him and they played together. The only problem came at feeding time - Rover will not tolerate another dog going after his food, so separate feeding is a must. I also have a cat and they also became friends. He is a relatively quiet boy who rarely barks.
All in all he is a fairly calm, quiet, child friendly, dog friendly, cat friendly boy.
I truly believe that he deserves to find his forever family; he was lucky to find me on the road and he is now with very good hands to have a chance. I wish I could keep him but with my full time job and kids and 2 dogs it is just to much and I will in the end lose myself. I'm thankful to PAWS that they found a space for him and I believe that somewhere there is someone who would love to go long walks with him and let him chase the Famous Grouse πŸ˜€ as he is hunting dog, he pick up the smells easily.
