River was found on a beach along with another dog. They were both in very bad condition - emaciated and dehydrated with scars and missing fur on their bodies - and probably wouldn't have been able to survive much longer on their own. Even after a few months in the shelter they are still underweight to the point that you can clearly see their spine and ribs. Wherever they came from was not a good place because they both suffered total neglect.

In spite of his poor condition and lack of weight, River has proved to be a very lively boy. Like the majority of hounds, he is very affectionate and loves human company. Whilst he has a tendency at the moment to jump up at people, it took less than 5 minutes to get him to sit and stay (actually, we are still working on that one, but it is going well). So, either he has had some training or is just super intelligent and eager to please. He is a dog that will enjoy being kept busy whether it be playing, long walks or (possibly) toys - he will chase after a ball and bring it back to be thrown again.  He will do well with people who are understanding of his ways but are able to handle and train him with kindness and consistency.  Like most hounds he will grow to be a great family dog.

River has tested positive for Leishmania, but don't let that put you off adopting this gorgeous boy. He is on the appropriate medication and food and is improving all the time. We are happy to explain everything about Leishmania should you be interested.
