Name: PEDRO
Gender: Male

Adult size: Small
Admitted to PAWS: July 2021

Shoulder height: approx. 32 cm
Height to head: approx. 42 cm

Pedro lived on the street together with Hattie the Hound and Tatty the Cyprus Poodle probably for most of his life. He has become used to people shooing him away , or worse, throwing things at him to make him go away. We have been trying to catch the group for a few years, but so far have only managed to capture Pedro. We managed to lure him into a trap and he was not happy about it.

All the time we have been feeding him it was obvious that he is not used to the human hand. He would ever come within reach, preferring to sit or stand at a distance watching our every move. Having spent his whole life doing exactly as he pleases when he pleases, shelter life hasn't come easy to him, but he is beginning to settle to it ad is even now approaching us - tentatively, and not too close but it is progress.  We have managed to get a collar on him but he is still getting used to the lead. For the first minutes he is like a bucking bronco trying to escape, but then he calms down and will allow himself to be stroked. This does not make him particularly happy but it is the only way to show him that we mean him no harm.

Pedro will need very special people to adopt him. People who have an ultra secure home and garden.  People who have the patience of a saint. People who will not give up at the 1st, 2nd or 102nd hurdle.  We will continue our work with him until someone comes forward who will listen to our advice and possibly that of a dog behaviourist/trainer to learn how best to deal with him until that little switch in his head flicks over and he realises that life with people can be good.  Pedro is by no means an aggressive dog, he just doesn't know how to trust people. He may snap when first approached but only as a warning; he soon stops

If, after reading this, you would like to give Pedro the chance he needs and are willing to stick with him and offer him the security he needs then please get in touch with us.  Ideally, you will already have a calm dog who will help to show Pedro the way. He gets on great with other dogs, after all he has spent his life living closely with two on the streets (a couple of cats as well) and he has shared his pen with several with no problems at all.

If you would like to give PEDRO his chance or would like to talk to us about him, then please send PAWS a private Facebook message, call us on (+357) 99683775, email colleenatpaws@outlook.com, or come to the shelter to see him.
